Ex. 1 – TANGRAMS

These are the tangrams which we completed during class.

I found this exercise very challenging, but also fun and interesting.  It helped me to try and visualise more creative ideas in relation to each subject category and steer away from what seemed cliche and ‘obvious’.  I tried to go for a more humorous and fantasy approach for the action figure, face and appliance which are all based from real life – but have an added unrealistic and futuristic twist on them.

I found it difficult to produce an organic element, the flower, from such sharply defined and rigid shapes, but tried to use them to create a flower which seemed to be influenced by the movement of nature.  It seems very oddly shaped, and is not at all symmetrical, but I thought it reflected one which had had some of its petals flung away by the wind or human hands.

My favourite tangram composition would have to be the turtle which I produced for the animal subject category, as it appears mechanical, but still bores some resemblance to a real turtle.

ANIMAL – TURTLE

APPLIANCE – TOASTER

VEHICLE – MOTORBIKE/RIDE ON LAWNMOWER

FACE – HAPPY EXPRESSION

PLANT – FLOWER

ACTION FIGURE – MALE TRANSFORMER TYPE FIGURE
